Hanwell Town 1 Beaconsfield SYCOB 4
By Clive Cooke
Match report by Malcolm Pierce
This defeat extended Town’s depressing run of home games without a win to eight with the only point in that time coming against Potters Bar. Beaconsfield’s young side started brightly and with only a minute gone a neat move on the left set up Tristan Campbell but, to Town’s relief, his finish did not match the preceding play. Shortly afterwards Ryan Egan won the ball in the air, which was to become a feature of the game, but Tom Inch was just beaten to the bouncing ball. Then Bradley Simmonds warmed visiting ‘keeper Sam Bunting’s hands with a shot from an angle, after he had recovered from a trip as he raced in from the wing.
Beaconsfield responded straightaway and Martin Herdman produced a spectacular save to foil Jack McKnight. However, from the ensuing far post corner, Harry Tucker met the ball on the half-volley to give the Rams the lead with less than ten minutes on the clock. Five minutes later Town had a double chance to equalize. A volleyed cross from Calum Duffy was nodded on by Ryan. The ball reached Christian Tyler-Law but his shot was well saved and Tom Hunt’s ensuing volley flew over the bar. Two minutes later a strong run by Ryan set up Tom but his left-foot shot was held by a sprawling Bunting.
As the twentieth minute approached a mis-kicked clearance required Joe Chandiram to save the day by clearing off the line. Town also went close when, following a free kick, Oliver Duffy sent over a left-footed cross that was well met by Tom Hunt but whistled over the bar. However, the next goal fell to the visitors. After Aaron Minhas had missed a good chance, an inch-perfect cross from Timothy Wohlfiel was headed unstoppably into the net by Sam Deadfield just before the forty minute mark. Hanwell battled back and went close to reducing the arrears in the closing minutes of the half. Bradley had a penalty appeal rejected and a twenty-five yarder saved, while Tom hit the post with the ’keeper well beaten.
Hanwell needed a good start to the second half but it was not to be. Within ninety seconds of the restart, with Ashleigh Artwell claiming a penalty, James Harding scored a third for the visitors. Town tried to respond and Tom Duffy had a powerful, goal-worthy shot parried by Bunting. However it was Beaconsfield who scored next. A good run by Artwell saw his cross flicked on by Harding for Minhas to net.
To their credit Hanwell kept striving to reduce the arrears. Olly had a header saved, as did Bradley after good work by Gavin Hinds-Cadette. Simeon sent over a good ball which Calum laid off to Ryan but he was thwarted by the onrushing ‘keeper. Town finally grabbed a goal when Bunting could only parry Gavin’s fierce, low cross and Ahmed Mohammed netted a deserved consolation.
The Rams were a very good side with Lee Togwell outstanding. They deserved to win but Town had created many more chances than of late and, had they taken a couple of them, could have made this a much closer score-line.
