TUESDAY 28TH. AUGUST 2018.
THE BOSTIK LEAGUE, SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION.
HANWELL TOWN (0) 1 V. 0 (0) ASHFORD TOWN ( MIDDX.)
Hanwell claimed all three points against local rivals Ashford with an Ibrahim Olutade goal in the first minute of added time in this re-arranged fixture. The visitors had dominated the second period but Hanwell’s resilient rear-guard action had kept their goal intact enabling a single strike to earn the victory.
The home side had begun the game on the front foot. A deep cross from Glenn Yala had troubled the home defence and a chance had been created from the resultant corner, but the shot went over the bar. Then, taking a leaf out of Jordan Pickford’s play-book, Hanwell ‘keeper Aaron Bufton drilled the ball the length of the field. The speedy Ibrahim raced on to it but Ashford custodian Tobin Tyler was quickly out to clear in the nick of time. As the quarter hour mark approached Olly Duffy forced Tyler to dive to save his low free kick, following a foul on Calum just outside the area. Tyler was in the right place again three minutes later after Ibrahim had created himself some space for a shot after receiving Gareth Chendlik’s flick-on.
Ashford’s first goal threat came in the eighteenth minute when they were awarded a free kick within shooting distance. However Aaron was not troubled as Mark Bitmead shot well over the bar. Town responded with Ibrahim latching on to another ball down the middle but a timely challenge prevented anything coming of it. Hanwell continued to look the more likely team to open the scoring but despite having a lot of possession and putting in a number of crosses they could not create any clear-cut chances.
Up the other end the Tangerines’ fleet-footed Bradley Wilson out-stripped the Hanwell defence before forcing Aaron to save well with his feet. The final five minutes of the half were eventful. Firstly Gareth had a shot well saved after receiving the ball in the slot from Imedd Kartita. Then Harry Tamplin went close with a header from a free kick. A minute later he was making a vital clearance under pressure in his own area. In time added on Ibrahim was just beaten to the ball by Tyler once again as he raced through. Seconds later Glenn found Ibrahim in the area but his shot from an angle was well saved by Tyler.
Hanwell started the half with a good move involving Ibrahim and Gareth down the left but Andrew O’Brien’s cross was comfortably held by Tyler. The rest of the half was a reversal of the first forty-five with the visitors having the lion’s share of the possession and field position and Hanwell being restricted to breakaways. In one of these sorties downfield Glenn had his cross blocked after a promising run while Imedd was forced wide after demonstrating good close dribbling skills.
Ashford were concerning the home supporters with the number of times they were putting the ball into the Hanwell area but Town’s defence were managing to hold firm.
An Ashford free kick was blocked by the wall, a well-flighted corner was headed narrowly over and Harry, Olly and Tom Duffy all headed away various crosses into the box. The siege was lifted momentarily when a lovely exchange of passes with substitute Ismael Ehui set up the Imedd but he fired disappointingly wide.
The visitors continued to press for a winner as the game entered the last quarter of an hour and won a series of corners but Hanwell held firm. A ‘training ground’ Hanwell free kick move down the right led to a dangerous low cross into the box by Kieron Cathline but there was no end result. With a minute of normal time to go Kofi Lockhart-Adams could have won it for Ashford but he missed the target. Hanwell’s chance of scoring a late winner seemed to have gone when Tyler saved easily from Ibrahim but a minute later Town went ahead. A free kick from Imedd fell to Ibrahim’s feet and he made no mistake. This was a cue for wild celebrations on the pitch and from the ‘Massive’, in front of their new flag hung up at the rear of the newly named ‘Ray Duffy Stand’. An extra five minutes were then played but Town held out to maintain their one hundred per cent record in the Bostik South Central.
