SATURDAY 15TH. SEPTEMBER 2018.
THE BOSTIK LEAGUE, SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION.
HANWELL TOWN (0) 0 V. 0 (0) CHIPSTEAD FC.
A point apiece was probably a fair reflection of the majority of this game but Hanwell will feel that their performance in the final twenty minutes deserved more. Most of the early exchanges had been in midfield with Harry Tamplin continually being in the right place to prevent the visitors from doing anything with their possession in Hanwell’s half. It was not until after the quarter hour mark that Town manufactured a noteworthy move of their own. A flowing move down the right saw Kieron Cathline slide in Calum Duffy, but the latter’s low cross was comfortably cleared away by the uncompromising Chipstead defence. The first real shot of the game arrived in the twentieth minute when Oliver Thornton’s athletic overhead kick whistled a foot over the Hanwell bar. Five minutes later Aaron Bufton, in the Hanwell goal, was called upon to leap high to tip away the tricky Sam Clayton’s ‘cross-cum-shot’, that was heading for the top corner.
Hanwell finally threatened the visitors’ goal after thirty-three minutes. Firstly Harry headed a Charlie Barton corner over the bar. Then Dean laid the ball to Kieron who pulled it back to set up Calum from close range. With the Town faithful about to celebrate the opening goal Chipstead ‘keeper Michael Sibley managed to save with his feet. Towards the end of the half both Calum and Tom Collins made themselves space to shoot from outside the box but neither troubled Sibley.
The second half was to prove more entertaining than the first but neither side managed to cause the club’s Commercial Director to signal a goal on the impressive Town scoreboard. The visitors had the first clear cut chance of the half but Shabazz Omofe pulled the ball wide from the edge of the area as Town defenders rushed towards him. A minute later Sibley was down well to save from Charlie after early substitute Gareth Chendlik had found him in the box. That man Clayton had Hanwell worried when, as the hour approached, he cut inside and curled a shot towards the far, top corner. Fortunately for Town he did not put enough bend on it.
Town manufactured a great chance to go in front in the sixty-fifth minute, setting up Jack Waldren ten yards out, but he drove the ball into the side netting to the anguish of the home support. Chipstead retaliated positively and sent over a couple of deep crosses but the Hanwell defenders were equal to the task. Hanwell the missed another good chance with twenty minutes to go. A hopeful ball up-field bounced into the path of the chasing Gareth Chendlik but he was unable to control the awkward bounce with only the ‘keeper to beat. Almost immediately Aaron was called upon to save well at his near post from substitute Jake Robinson. The ensuing corner was well met by the head of the towering Sam Page but his effort was narrowly too high.
With all three substitutes on the field Hanwell were going all out for the winner in the latter stages of the contest. Jack had a long range right-footer saved while a header from Harvey Killeen met the same fate. Kieron then made an eye-catching sortie down the right and played the ball low into the six yard box but it was well dealt with by the visitors’ defence. A deep ball in from Jack led to Tom Collins’ shot rattling against the crossbar and a bout of head tennis ended with Harvey heading narrowly wide from close range. Chipstead were being limited to breakaways but still threatened when in advanced positions. However Olly Duffy managed to get in the way of a goal-bound shot from Dean Lodge, Aaron denied Ezekiel Bademosi’s low drive and Tom Duffy did well to head clear when under pressure from Allan Tait.
Hanwell substitute Ismael Ehui was getting on the ball a lot for Town as the game progressed. He went close to scoring in the eighty-fifth minute, when his effort went wide, and again two minutes later, when Dean Hamlin blocked his goal bound drive. Hanwell’s final ‘near miss’ came in the fourth minute of added time. Gareth’s header found Kieron who clipped the ball towards the goal. He beat the ‘keeper but skipper Page saved the day for the visitors by clearing off the line. In boxing terminology Hanwell had ‘shaded it on points but failed to deliver the knockout blow’ and so only came away with one point when, perhaps they could have got more.
