Hanwell Town 1-2 Tooting and Mitcham
SATURDAY 27TH. OCTOBER 2018.
THE BOSTIK ISTHMIAN LEAGUE, SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION.
HANWELL TOWN (0) 1 V. 2 (1) TOOTING & MITCHAM.
What a difference a week makes! Having secured three points on a bright, sunny day a week ago Hanwell lost out to their illustrious opponents on a bitingly cold, wintry day at ‘The Powerday’ on Saturday. The spectators who braved the cold were not treated to an attention-grabbing start, with neither team managing a shot in the first ten minutes. Each side then tried from long-range but Tre Mitford for Town and Danny Bassett for Tooting failed to hit the target. Then, out of the blue, Tom Collins sent Tre clear. The striker seemed to have too much time and tried to place the ball, but he hit the ‘keeper, to the great disappointment of the Hanwell faithful.
As the twenty minute mark approached Tooting presaged what was to come. Firstly Peter Wedgeworth whipped in a fierce free kick that was held by Aaron Bufton. Then Elijah Simpson raced clear down the left flank before crossing in front of everyone. Hanwell responded with a good move involving Harry Rush and Calum Duffy, that culminated in a shot by Tre which was parried by visiting ‘keeper by Luke Colquhoun. The ball was met by Tom but his header was comfortably saved. Two minutes later Tom went close again, clipping the ball over his own head before volleying narrowly wide.
With half time fast approaching, Hanwell had done more than enough to go in level at the break, but it was not to be. From way out on Hanwell’s left flank Wedgeworth whipped in another dangerous free kick, just asking for a head to be put on it. It was unfortunate for Hanwell that, although Olly Duffy beat everyone to the ball, he directed it towards the Hanwell net. It looked like an own goal but Dominic Morgan-Griffiths claimed a touch, just about verified by a close examination of footage on a visiting supporter’s mobile phone by the ‘dubious goals committee’! Tooting nearly made it two in stoppage time when the aforementioned Simpson dribbled into the box, executed a perfect step-over to make space but fired over the top.
Tooting looked to increase their advantage at the restart. Harry Tamplin did well to block a fierce shot for a corner, after which Town did well to deal with another menacing free kick from Wedgeworth. Up the other end a Town corner led to Tre having a volley saved by Colquhoun’s feet. The striker was then replaced by Gareth Chendlik in the fifty-fifth minute. In the fifty-sixth Calum got his head to a free kick and Gareth prodded home from close range. Almost immediately Town went close to going in front. Gareth pulled the ball back from the bye-line to Harvey, who allowed it to run to Calum, but his shot went wide. Kieron Cathline then attacked down the right wing, crossing to Gareth who did not make the firmest of contacts and the chance was lost. At this point Hanwell looked well worth a point, and maybe more, but the last quarter of the game belonged to the Terrors.
Elijah Simpson started to pick up the ball deep and run at Hanwell. He demonstrated pace and control and he won a series of free kicks on the left flank. From the first of these Wedgeworth’s ball in was not properly cleared and Bassett prodded the ball into the goal. Kieron was injured in conceding the free kick and Williams Danquam came on for a promising twenty minutes. By the final whistle three Hanwell players had been shown yellow cards for failing to halt Simpson fairly and each of the free kicks had required stout defending. Tooting went close to a third when Morgan-Griffiths swivelled and fired over in the eightieth minute. Hanwell played the latter stages of the game with ten men, after Harry Tamplin fell heavily after being backed into, and needed to rely on breakaways but no further noteworthy chances were forthcoming.
In conclusion, Tooting were worthy winners but, for almost seventy minutes, the result could have gone either way. The last twenty, however, were rather worrying in more ways than one!
