Hanwell make it 3 in a row

SATURDAY 23RD. MARCH 2019.
THE BOSTIK ISTHMIAN LEAGUE, SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION.
HANWELL TOWN (0) 3 V. 1 (0) MOLESEY.
Town achieved their third win on the spin against a lowly, but spirited Molesey at ‘The Powerday’ on a sunny, post-equinox afternoon. Both teams started brightly and in the third minute a long clearance from Aaron Bufton reached Louis Bircham who forced a good save from visiting ‘keeper Alex Kozakis. Almost immediately the surprisingly nimble Dre Grobler raced clear and shot past Aaron, but against the foot of the post. Two minutes later it was Hanwell’s turn to go close with Louis’ quick free kick putting Brian Testolin clear on the right, from whence he drove the ball across the face of the goal, evading everyone to result in a goal kick.
Hanwell went on to have two more half-chances prior to the ten minute mark. Firstly, Gareth Chendlik did not get enough purchase on the ball with his head to convert another well-placed free kick from Louis. Then, a deft flick from Brian put Jerry Maja through, but he was forced wide and fired over from an angle. Two minutes later a length-of-the-pitch move involving Kieron Cathline, Brian and Jerry finished with Harry Rush’s shot being saved by Kozakis. It looked like it was not going to be Hanwell’s day when Olly Duffy’s flying header from Louis’ free kick was ruled out for offside. It appeared that Town might regret not capitalising on any of their chances when Grobler was put clear by Nathan Wood. Fortunately for the home side the visiting striker fired tamely over the bar.
After twenty minutes of entertainment the game then went dead from an excitement point of view, with nothing noteworthy happening for the ensuing twenty minutes. Then, either side of the forty minute mark, there was a chance for either side to break the deadlock. For Town, Brian’s long-range shot from a flick-on by Gareth was kept out by Kozakis. Then, for Molesey, Grobler’s goal-bound header from a corner was well blocked by Will Wambeek.
Town came out of the traps quickly in the second period and Brian’s goal-bound shot, following Louis’ through ball, was turned away by Kozakis. The ensuing corner was initially dealt with but the ball fell to Harry, who appeared to be tripped as he headed for the area. The referee saw that Town still had the advantage and waved play to go on. Gareth made himself some space in a tight situation, and fired in to the bottom corner. Undaunted the visitors went back up the other end and Grobler made himself room to shoot but only found Aaron’s hands rather than the back of the net. Home fans got excited in the fifty-fifth minute when Brian raced clear in a three-on-one situation. Sadly the opportunity was wasted when the wide man’s pass found the only defender in the vicinity.
The visitors made Town pay for not increasing their advantage by levelling just after the hour mark. Once again that man Grobler was involved. His header on goal was spectacularly cleared over his shoulder by Jack Waldren but the ball was seized upon by Nic Osbourne who fired home from close range. The visitors then went in search of the winner and a series of well-flighted corners were causing Hanwell a lot of concern. In this spell Grobler almost got the goal his performance deserved when his goal-bound header was deflected on to the crossbar by Will Wambeek. Then a half cleared free kick fell to Wood but, thankfully for Hanwell, he fired over. However, it was Town who scored the next goal. Substitute Zaine Gangadeen whipped in a low shot that was palmed away by a sprawling Kozakis into the path of Gareth, who was sensibly following up the attempt on goal. He made no mistake from close range and threw himself into the arms of the vociferous ‘Massive’. Three minutes later Gareth had a chance to complete his hat-trick but a tempting cross from Jack just eluded his forehead. It did not matter however, as, a minute later, Zaine displayed some dazzling footwork on the line before finding Olly, who, in turn, played the ball to Brian. The wide man got past his marker made the game safe for Town. The final ten minutes were uneventful apart from the fact that Joe Mills came off the bench to make his first team debut.
In conclusion Hanwell did well to take three points against a team whose performance defied their lowly league position, and who would have driven home believing that their all-round performance had been worthy of a point.
