Hanwell Town 0 Hertford Town 0

Hard toil in the sun
Report by Malcolm Paice
This game was not a classic! The hottest day of the year so far, the resultant firm pitch, despite watering, and the visitors’ desperate need for points all conspired to help create a stalemate. There was much effort and endeavour from both sides, but very little for the decent-sized crowd to get excited about. Hanwell’s only threats in the first period came from Joe Mills, making his first start for the first team after coming on as a substitute two weeks ago. He sent in a couple of free kicks that went begging and had low drive saved by Dan Purdue in the Hertford goal. Up the other end the visitors created only one good chance, when Chancey Dash turned Andy O’Brien but hit he shot too centrally to trouble Aaron Bufton.
The ‘Toon’ started the second half on the up and a neat exchange of passes between Joe and Harvey Killeen deserved more than the resultant easily saved shot. The visitors responded well and Dash went close with a free kick. The next significant action came on the hour mark with the home management making two substitutions in an attempt to change the pattern of play and break the deadlock. The changes worked in the sense that Hanwell looked more likely to score, but failed in the fact that Town did not put the ball past Purdue. In fac,t it took a timely interception by Andy to prevent Hertford from going in front.
In this final period Gareth Chendlik won a number of headers resulting in more pressure being applied to the visitors’ back four but some poor crossing negated the better build up. Jerry Maja did manage one accurate ball into the box, where it found an unmarked Louis Bircham on the far post. Unfortunately for Town three defenders threw themselves in front of the shot and blocked it away. A minute later Gareth sidestepped the ‘keeper with the ball at his feet but was forced too wide to get in a shot. Louis then went close again after being put through by Harry Rush.
With time running out both sides went close to grabbing the winner. For Hertford Oluwadara Dada shot wide after a strong, mazy run. For Hanwell, Will Wambeek failed to hit the target with a free kick, after Gareth had been somewhat cynically brought down just outside the area. Aaron was then called upon to make an excellent save to deny Tommy Fletcher before substitute Jamie Calvin went close with a header for Hanwell in added-on time.
Despite the lack of excitement on the pitch the visiting ‘behind the goal’ supporters from Hertford, made a lot of noise with their voices, hooters and even rattles, and shared the honours for vocal support with Town’s ‘Massive’. On the pitch a point apiece seemed to be a fair result. Now Town have the local derby with the league champions, Hayes and Yeading, to look forward to on Monday.
