North Leigh 2-4 Hanwell Town

Geordies progress in FA Cup

Travelling to Oxfordshire side North Leigh, we recorded an excellent 4-2 win to earn ourselves a First Qualifying Round home game against Potters Bar Town on Saturday 8th September.
Our side was back to normal after our mid week defeat against Aveley in the League Cup with only Calum Duffy retaining his place in our line up.
There was quite a slope on the pitch with North Leigh kicking down in it the opening half.
There was little between the sides in the opening stages but we had a slight edge and thought we had taken the lead in the twelfth minute when a shot by Louis Bircham was diverted into the path of Calum who netted from close range but the assistant referee's flag was raised and the goal was disallowed. In the twentieth minute we had two chances in very quick succession, firstly when Ibrahim Olutade played the ball into the path of Gareth Chendlik but he shot wildly wide of the target and then Louis Bircham did the same self thing, this time the shooting opportunity being set up by Jack Waldren.
Jack was taking a series of corner kicks with his left foot from the right wing and from one of these the ball rebounded off a defender to hit the crossbar before it was scrambled clear. Shortly afterwards, a free kick by Louis was headed goalwards by Ibz only for the home teams keeper , Luke Sanders, to turn the ball over the crossbar. However, in the twenty seventh minute we got the opening goal that we deserved. From another corner, Ollie Duffy headed the ball goalwards and brother Calum headed home from close range and this time there was not an assistant's flag to deny him. Brother Tom then headed over another corner from Jack before North Leigh equalised in the thirty ninth minute. A strong run down our left flank by Josh Pinn culminated in a fierce low cross into our goalmouth, the ball was blocked but it ran back into the path of George Seacole who finished in style giving Aaron Bufton no chance. However, our response was immediate as we were awarded a free kick just outside their penalty area and Ollie drove the ball past a badly positioned wall into the corner of the net for us to go into the interval leading 2-1.
It became 3-1 five minutes into the second half thanks to an excellent individual goal by Ibz who after evading a couple of tackles drilled the ball from around twenty yards low into their net. However, in a similar fashion to earlier, North Leigh's were immediately back in the game as for the first and only time in the game, our defence was cut to pieces giving Pinn a simple task to beat Aaron at the far post. As the game went on we became more and more dominant and Louis drilled the ball just over the crossbar and another corner by Jack was headed wide by Ollie.

Our fourth goal and the one that sealed our victory came in the 65th minute from Immed Kartita who just fifteen seconds earlier had replaced Louis. Ibz played the ball into his path and Immed's shot from outside the penalty area found its way into the bottom corner of the home team's net.
We made two further substitutions with new signing Ishmael Ehui replacing Gareth and Dean McDonnell replacing Glenn Yala and we comfortably saw out the remaining period of play and we could well have increased our margin of victory with Andy O'Brien heading over from point blank range.
Team: Aaron Bufton, Keiron Cathline,Jack Waldren, Oliver Duffy (c), Tom Duffy,Andrew O'Brien, Louis Bircham, Calum Duffy,Gareth Chendlik, Ibrahim Olutade and Glenn Yala. Substitutes used: Immed Kartita for Bircham(65), Ismael Kartita for Chendlik (75) and Dean McDonnell for Yala (80). Unused substitutes Harry Tamplin, Charlie Barton, Haluna Masembe and Arsen Ujkat.
